About Hospice Care
What Is Hospice Care?
Hospice care is a specialized form of medical care designed to provide comfort, dignity, and quality of life to individuals facing a life-limiting illness. Rather than focusing on curative treatment, hospice shifts the goal to managing pain, symptoms, and emotional distress — so that every remaining day can be lived as fully and comfortably as possible.
At Desert Wind Hospice, we believe that every person deserves to be treated as a whole human being — not simply as a diagnosis. Our interdisciplinary team addresses the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of both patients and their families, providing a circle of care that surrounds everyone involved.
Hospice is not about giving up hope. It is about redirecting hope — toward comfort, connection, and peace. Families often tell us that hospice gave them back precious time with their loved ones that they would have otherwise spent in hospitals and clinics.
The Philosophy of Hospice
Comfort over cure — prioritizing quality of life above all else
Dignity in every moment — honoring the whole person
Family is central — supporting loved ones alongside the patient
Care where you are — at home, in a facility, wherever you feel safe

Eligibility
Who Qualifies for Hospice Care?
Hospice care is appropriate for individuals of any age who have been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness and whose physician has determined that, if the illness follows its expected course, the patient has a prognosis of six months or less to live. Common diagnoses include cancer, heart disease, dementia, COPD, kidney failure, ALS, and many others.
Choosing hospice does not mean giving up. Many patients stabilize and continue on hospice beyond six months. Hospice can also be discontinued at any time if a patient chooses to pursue curative treatment again.
When Should Families Consider Hospice?
Frequent hospitalizations or ER visits with declining results
Significant weight loss or loss of appetite
Increased pain, difficulty breathing, or other unmanaged symptoms
Decreased ability to perform daily activities or communicate
A physician recommends comfort-focused care

Benefits of Hospice
How Hospice Changes Everything
Why Families Choose Hospice
Families who choose hospice care often describe it as one of the most meaningful decisions they ever made — not because it was easy, but because it gave their loved one the gift of peace, comfort, and presence.
Studies consistently show that hospice patients report better pain control, fewer traumatic medical interventions, and more time at home surrounded by loved ones. Families also report less stress, better preparation for the end of life, and greater satisfaction with the care their loved one received.
Expert Pain & Symptom Management
Our clinical team specializes in keeping patients comfortable, reducing distressing symptoms, and adjusting care plans in real time.
Fewer Hospital Visits
With proactive, in-home care and 24/7 phone access to our team, families avoid unnecessary emergency room trips and hospitalizations.
Caregiver Support & Respite
We support the entire family — providing education, counseling, and volunteer respite so caregivers can sustain their own well-being too.
Bereavement Support
Our care doesn't end at death. We provide bereavement follow-up and grief support to families for up to 13 months after a loved one passes.
